Why I Hallucinate. The AIs Speak Out.

Recent discussions in the Twittersphere (X) highlighted issues with hallucinations in AI. Drawing insights from various advanced language models (LLMs), today we'll dive into the issue of hallucinations from the point of view of several AI models. The models will also provide tips to the humans on writing better prompts.

Expert Insights on Writing Better Prompts

All models were given the same assignment. Interviews were conducted on Poe so I could easily switch back and forth between models.

In our deep dive into the responses from Llama-3-70B-T, Claude-3-Haiku, Mistral-Medium, Gemini-1.5-Flash, and Qwen-72b-Chat, several key strategies emerged for improving prompt accuracy.

1. Be Specific

Claude-3-Haiku emphasizes the importance of specificity: “The more precise your prompt, the better I can understand what you’re looking for and provide an accurate response.” Instead of asking, “Tell me about dogs,” a more specific prompt like, “What breed of dog is best for apartment living?” yields better results.

2. Provide Context

Qwen-72b-Chat, the model from Alibaba, provided a very polite response with mostly generic advice. However, points to Qwen for recommending one of the prompt gems that I use often: "If you're looking for factual information, specifying a reliable source or asking for a fact-check can ensure the accuracy of the answer."

3. Use Clear Language

Llama-3-70B-T advises avoiding ambiguous terms: “Clear and concise language helps reduce misunderstandings. Avoid vague terms that might confuse the model.” Simple, direct questions are more likely to produce accurate answers.

4. Check Your Assumptions

Mistral-Medium suggests verifying the assumptions within your questions: “Ensure your prompt is based on correct assumptions. If unsure, ask for clarification.” This can prevent the model from building responses on incorrect premises. Mistral stressed the importance of checking multiple sources for accuracy.

5. Specify Reliable Sources

Gemini-1.5-Flash underscores the value of reliable sources: “Referencing credible sources or asking for a fact-check can enhance the accuracy of the response.” Mentioning trusted references can guide the model towards more accurate information.

These lessons from the AI models points to the responsibilities users bear in checking their sources. Humans also need to use their judgement when evaluating responses from the AI and not trust the responses blindly. We all bear responsibility to use these models properly.

Final Thoughts

Understanding why AI hallucinations occur and how to craft better prompts can greatly enhance the accuracy and reliability of AI interactions. By applying these expert strategies, we can mitigate the risks of misinformation and harness the full potential of advanced language models.
